Au 31 du mois d'Août is a song discussing the successes of privateer Robert Surcouf (12 December 1773 – 8 July 1827) against the English navy. He had numerous successes, and equally as plenty of close calls, but his achievements were tremendous for a nation which always struggled navally against the English, giving the impression that the impossible seem for a moment probable.
