Produced for McGraw-Hill Book Company by Sandler/Wald Documentary Associates, this film uses a combination of still portraits and narration to convey its story. Advised by Dr. John Hope Franklin, a professor of history at the University of Chicago, the film credits the explosion of the USS Maine and the beginning of the Spanish-American war as a turning point for American foreign policy. The war marked divisions domestically between imperialists and anti-imperialists and set a precedent of the United States being an interventionist power that seeks to protect and preserve liberty and freedom.
