ABBA - Don't Shut Me Down Yamaha Genos Roland G70 by Rico “Don't Shut Me Down“ is a song by Swedish pop music group ABBA. It was released as a single on 2 September 2021 as a dual lead single alongside “I Still Have Faith in You“. Both songs are from the band's upcoming ninth studio album and its first in 40 years, Voyage. Agnetha Fältskog performs lead vocals. It became the first ABBA release to top the Swedish singles chart since “Summer Night City“ in 1978. ABBA released a lyric video on YouTube of “Don't Shut Me Down“ to accompany the release. It is directed by Mike Anderson of the production company Able. The lyric video gained 1.4 million views in 24 hours following its release, placing in the top three of YouTube's trending rankings in 12 countries, including the UK. Kate Mossman of the New Statesman wrote: “Its opening has a West End feel, like Evita's tentative address to the masses, but then it whizzes with a 'Dancing Queen' mirrorball glissando into squelchy 1980s disco, giving the impression it's going to be straightforward. But then it mutates, and mutates into something wonderful and strange.“ Jon Pareles of The New York Times is similarly positive, calling the song “a strutting march with gleaming orchestration and scrubbing disco guitars, stolid and earnestly tuneful. ABBA (/ˈæbə/ AB-ə, Swedish: [ˈâbːa]) are a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group's name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names. Widely considered one of the greatest musical groups of all time, they became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1983. They have achieved 48 hit singles. In 1974, ABBA were Sweden's first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Waterloo“, which in 2005 was chosen as the best song in the competition's history as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the contest. After ABBA separated, Andersson and Ulvaeus continued their success writing music for multiple audiences including stage, musicals and movies, while Fältskog and Lyngstad pursued solo careers. Ten years after the group broke up, a compilation, ABBA Gold, was released, becoming a worldwide best-seller. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into Mamma Mia!, a successful musical that toured worldwide.
