DM itself maintains its sense of humor throughout and while the stakes raise they never get so bad that you're left feeling hopeless. Even this scene, which looks pretty harrowing out of context, is built up to with a sense of “darn it sucks we're gonna have to do this but it's necessary so that we can achieve the happy ending we are working towards“.
