Ce film est une adaptation de la pièce d'Alexandre Ostrovski “La Fille sans dot“, un drame emblématique du XIXe siècle. Larissa est une jeune et belle dame d’ascendance noble, mais sa famille est incroyablement pauvre. Sa mère veut donc la marier à un homme riche. Larissa a de nombreux prétendants et admirateurs, mais pas un seul ne la traite sérieusement, plutôt comme un beau jouet ou un accessoire.
