Show Place: The Moulin Rouge Club in Los Angeles, California. In December 1965 it became The Hullabaloo club. See photo: โBe My Babyโ was written by Jeff Barry (born as Joel Adelberg; April 3, 1938), Ellie Greenwich (Oct. 23, 1940 โ Aug. 26, 2009) and Phil Spector (New York, 26 December 1939 โ Stockton (California), 16 January 2021). It was recorded on July 5, 1963 at Gold Star Studios Hollywood, LA. The songโs innocence, sweetness and angst is part of the songโs sustained power. At its heart, โBe My Babyโ is as much about power and control as it is about romance. Today โBe My Babyโ is as ubiquitous as a pop classic gets with its plinking pianos and castanets, its echo-chambered double vocals and massive drums. Those drums (boom-ba-boom) at the start, immortalized by drummer โ Hal Blaine (5 februari 1929, Holyoke, Massachusetts - โ 11 maart 2019, Palm Desert, California), are a harbinger of something exciting is going to happen. Then suddenly itโs magic when the words are sung. And when the song is over there is this lingering believe of a happy ending: โhe came around, and they hooked upโโฆ. The song has been covered by everyone from John Lennon to Maroon 5. Itโs been honored by the Library of Congress and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The group recorded the song in Los Angeles at Gold Star Studios and was released August 1963. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys once said: โItโs the greatest record ever produced. No one will ever top that one.โ โI was driving and I had to pull over to the side of the road โ it blew my mind; โIt was a shock.โ Wilson estimates that heโs heard โBe My Baby,โ by the Ronettes, more than 1,000 times. Just 21 and already frustrated with his bandโs basic surf music, he bought the single and set about deconstructing its arrangement and production. Wilson: โI started analyzing all the guitars, pianos, bass, drums and percussion,โ he said by telephone. โOnce I got all those learned, I knew how to produce records.โ
