Originally built as the velodrome for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the building was redeveloped into the Biodome in 1992: a unique facility that allows visitors to walk through replicas of five ecosystems found in the Americas. Today, it is one of Montreal’s most popular tourist attractions and contains over 5000 plant and animal species spread throughout a South American rainforest, a North American maple forest, an estuary habitat modelled on the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence and a sub-polar region divided into Arctic and Antarctic habitats.
