Police clashed with youths in a Paris suburb on Tuesday after officers shot dead a 17-year-old driver at point-blank range after he refused to stop when ordered. A 38-year-old motorcycle officer was arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of the teenager, named in the French media as Naël, in Nanterre, a suburb to the west of Paris. Police sources initially suggested that the adolescent had driven at two officers as they tried to stop the vehicle. But this version appeared to be contradicted by a video of the incident published on Twitter showing the officers by the side of the car which had come to a standstill in the traffic, one with his gun pointed at the driver. As the yellow Mercedes AMG moved away, the officer fired. The driver was hit in the chest and lost control of the vehicle which crashed near by. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Yassine Bouzrou, Jennifer Cambla and Abdelmadjid Benamara, the lawyers representing the victim’s family, said that seconds before the gunshot, the officer can be heard in the video saying: “I’m going to put a bullet in your head.” The lawyers say the second officer can be heard saying: “Shoot him.” Read the best of our journalism: Subscribe to The Times and The Sunday Times YouTube channel: Find us on Facebook: Find us on Twitter: Find us on Instagram:
