In order to achieve high scores on your IELTS or TOEFL writing section, especially the academic essay, you will need to show variety in your sentence structures. Even more importantly, you will need to demonstrate your ability to use complex structures. In this video, we look at the difference between complex sentences and complex structures. The latter rely on set structures, such as the inverted sentence, the subjunctive, causative, and passive voices, and especially embedded clauses (clauses within clauses).
