Grigory Kogan (1901-1979) was a noted pianist, teacher and musicologist. He studied in Kiev with Vladimir Pukhalsky (who taught the Horowitz family) and composer Reinhold Gliere. Perhaps Kogan's most well-known student is composer Sofia Gubaidulina. In English he's remembered as the author of Busoni as Pianist, translated by Svetlana Belsky. If you haven't heard Kogan's playing, I recommend the beautiful recording of his transcription of Ravel's Kaddish which I uploaded a few years ago. For more info, please read Nina Svetlanova's tribute here. She studied with Kogan's wife, Sofia, who's also in this film. This film was directed by Irina Bessarabova (–), who also directed a film about Busoni and the Moscow Conservatory. Ирина Бессарабова
