The Siberian tiger or Amur tiger is one of the rarest tiger subspecies, and it is listed in the Red Data Book. Unlike other tigers, they leaned to survive in the snow, with temperatures going down to -40°C (-40°F). The vast majority of the population - around 95% - live in the Far East Russia, around 5% in China. By the 1940s fewer than 50 specimens remained on the planet. In 1947, the Amur tiger was put under the USSR government protection, but the population growth was extremely slow, reaching no more than 400 specimens by 2010. Things started to change dramatically after that, thanks to the initiatives of the Russian Geographical Society and the National project ‘Ecology’ endorsed by the President V. Putin. The recent data demonstrate that the Russian population of Amur tigers almost doubled over the past decade: There are currently more than 750 tigers roaming the Siberian wilderness.
