This is Vladivostok, in the far east of Russia. Over 9000 kilometres from Moscow, the Far East feels like the edge of the world but what is life like here? The Russian far east is the least populated region in Russia with only around 8 million people living here (or just over 5% of the Russian population). Vladivostok is the capital of Primorsky Krai and it’s the second-largest city in the Russian Far East, after Khabarovsk, with a population of just over 600,000. During the Soviet period it was a closed city, meaning no outsiders could enter, however these days, it is one of the most open cities Russia, with many tourists arriving from neighbouring countries (mainly China). Vladivostok is most famous as the final stop of the trans Siberian railway, the train stretching 7 days across from European to Asian Russia. It is also known for its natural harbour location and as the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet. We arrived yesterday on a ship from Korea, and can't wait to check out the city, and try to understand more about life here and its people.
