12 Movies That Struggled So Much At The Box Office They Killed Other Movies

Some movies fail so hard that their reviews and box office receipts end up killing other unmade movies. A successful movie can spawn an entire franchise, and in some cases, lead to the revival of a whole genre. However, this proverbial sword cuts both ways. A truly disastrous film can kill a potential series or end a sub-genre’s reign of box office dominance. 2001’s Valentine ended the '90s slasher resurgence with its box office failure, while 2007’s horror sequel Hostel 2 flopped so hard that the movie put the so-called “torture porn“ genre in a body bag. As brutal as these instances were, these flops didn’t have any pre-existing franchise plans or sequels in the pipeline. By contrast, flops like 2015’s Terminator: Genisys managed to kill entire trilogies with their underperformance. 2017’s The Mummy failed so hard that the Tom Cruise vehicle ended the entire Dark Universe until 2020’s wildly different The Invisible Man redefined its parameters. Sadly, these aren't the only examples of this phenomenon either; many movies have done so poorly they've derailed franchises and entire subgenres.
