Born and died in Pourrières, in the Var, Germain Nouveau formed with his friends Rimbaud and Verlaine the most remarkable trio of French poetry. Bohemian and vagabond, half holy, half mad, haunted by death and love, he opposed the publication of his collections (La Doctrine de l’Amour, Valentines) which were not published until posthumously or against his will. Revealed by the surrealists (Breton, Aragon) in the middle of the 20th century, it remains unknown to the general public. Recent research tends to show that he is the real author of the texts grouped under the title Illuminations.
