Kokeshi have a long history as gifts from Tohoku's hot spring towns. There are 10 or 11 main varieties of Kokeshi and today we're at the Yajiro Kokeshi Village in Shiroishi, Miyagi about 1 hour from Sendai city. Niiyama-san who is a Kokeshi master artisan will make one for us in his workshop and explain about the colors, the styles and how to judge what makes them beautiful.
