Having taken our followers down many a bizarre UK politics rabbit hole in recent months, we decided to flip things and wade in on the unfolding drama of the coming US 2024 Presidential election. Mindful that America is the most divided nation it has ever been, we decided to upset everybody in (nearly) equal measure. So we have made it about the advanced age of the two current frontrunners for the election, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, who seem about to be locked in for a second head-to-head (unless one of them is locked up). No serious offence is intended – either to political partisans, or to people of a certain age who may bristle. “We Are Young” was a smash stadium-rock style hit in the early 2010s – boosted by its inclusion in an episode of Glee in 2011. It was written by Fun (Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff, Andrew Dost) and Jeff Bhasker, with smooth guest vocals remotely recorded by Janelle Monáe. We had played with different ideas and possible backings to address the topic – including “.” and “Rich Men North of Richmond” – but this felt the most ‘us’ because it’s quite left-field and unexpected. And even while the track itself is pretty sprightly and energetic, the repetitive relentless chord sequence and drum beat feel in step with the same old faces dominating the political landscape and tying their respective parties in angst-ridden knots while seeking to return to the White House. Also: the music video features a slow motion riot and disaster unfolding where everyone’s disagreeing and fighting, so on point. * UPDATE SATURDAY NIGHT 09/09: Just on a point of expressing views & comments, we’re trying to let in people wanting to have their say / stating their preference, but please don’t bother replying to other comments as don’t want to endlessly monitor arguments. Get to do that enough at home already…* As ever – in fact, more than ever – we could not have turned this around without the support of our lovely Patreons. Do join us there if you fancy it, if you enjoy what we do and want to see behind the scenes and help us keep things ticking along. - You can also leave a tip at our virtual tip jar at: - _________________ ADAPTED LYRICS: Give him a second try To be a better President? It ended badly last time With the riot and the discontent America’s degenerating Voters losing heart It seems they’re facing two protagonists Ageing pretty fast, and I know it’s ageist to lament they’re old We all might hide things or forget But we’ve seen the blinks and muddled thinks The pause in Mitch McConnell’s speech, you know Some kind of seizure or attack So if by the time the race closes And the Primaries come to town We’ll hope they’ve withdrawn Outright They’re not young! Someone get them to retire! Why return Biden or worse Trump? Go find Someone young Who’s not shaky or a liar! Isn’t indicted – or infirm! Now we know that Trump got A bad mugshot I guess that he, he just thought Maybe he could find a way to scare the court What a maniac! Scamming Georgia votes ‘Cause he found someone to bully by phone Biden’s Soon eighty one! Should be sat beside a fire Writing his memoirs, having fun To fly In Air Force One Might be something he desires But to alight her takes a month Both of them old and white (na na na na na na) And neither too erudite (na na na na na na) Both of them much disliked (na na na na na na) As neither too statesmanlike (na na na na na na) Time is not on their side (na na na na na na) They have no reason to run (na na na na na na) So will someone come and carry them home tonight (na na na na na na) The angels haven’t arrived (na na na na na na) But I can hear the choir (na na na na na na) So will someone come and carry them home (na na na na na na) Why? Biden / Trump! Someone get them to retire! Isn’t it kinder not to run? Don’t fight Election Be a felon in Atlanta Or help your son Hunter with his guns So if by the time the poll closes And you haven’t fallen down Still, maybe stay home tonight _________________ SPECIAL THANKS to our HOWLERS on Patreon: Andy Riches Carol Leff Cliff Hope Dave Lee David Patrao David Ryan Derrick Brown Douglas Lind Jim the Magician Grandad Lew Meredith Dicks Mike Smith Simon Haslam Todd _________________
