It is sung twice on Great Saturday: during Matins of Holy Saturday (Jerusalem Matins) and during Paschal Midnight Office (Paschal Nocturn). The hirmos of the ninth ode of this Canon is sung also during the Vesperal Liturgy of st. Basil on Great Saturday. During Paschal Midnight Office, when the ninth ode is being sung, priests are taking the holy shroud (epitaphios) and bring it to the altar as the symbol of the resurrection of Christ and the empty tomb.
