In this chilling account from the late 18th century, we uncover the tragic and brutal murder of 22-year-old Ann Smith at the hands of Samuel Thorley. On a dark November day in 1776, her dismembered body was discovered in the Howty Brook, near the secluded woodland of Priesty Fields, Congleton. The horror of her savage death sent shockwaves through the local community. Thorley, arrested and swiftly brought to justice, was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to hang in April 1777. But the story didn’t end with his execution. As a grim warning to others, his lifeless body was displayed in a gibbet on the very heathland near to where he committed his heinous crime—a haunting reminder of justice in an unforgiving time.
