It was mostly a joke since… I believe (according to my research), this form of quotation originated in the US back in 70s, whether it appeared earlier than 70s or not. Besides, the quote is quite generally used so we won’t think that much of the origin of it, or? And Scarlatti though, was an Italian composer in the 18th century.
