Xiaoshu is the eleventh solar term in the twenty-four solar terms, marking the end of the month of Wu and the beginning of the month of Wei in the traditional Chinese calendar. It corresponds to the sun reaching 105 degrees of celestial longitude, falling around July 6-8 in the Gregorian calendar. ’Shu’ means heat, and Xiaoshu indicates the onset of mild heat before the peak of summer. While Xiaoshu is not the hottest period of the year, it precedes Dashu, the hottest solar term. There is a saying in Chinese folklore: ’Xiaoshu, Dashu, steaming above and boiling below.’ Many regions in China experience an increase in thunderstorms starting from Xiaoshu.
