Alireza Akbari, Iran’s former deputy defence minister, began giving information, including nuclear secrets, to Britain in 2004. He reportedly got away until 2019, when Iran discovered his alleged activities with the help of Russian intelligence. Akbari was hanged in January 2023 over accusations of espionage, an execution that was harshly denounced by the Western nations. Iran charged Akbari with being a MI6 agent but the British government has never acknowledged he was a spy.
