Klipper is the next evolution of 3D printer operating systems. Klipper is the firmware that resides on the microcontroller in your printer. It takes all the calculations that the printer has to do to move the print head and the bed to their proper positions while maintaining the heat of both the extruder and the bed and controlling how much hot melty plastic squirts out of the tip; and it lets a separate processor handle all of it. All Klipper on the printer does is accept commands from the other processor. This being many times more powerful can process the data at speeds a little STM MCU could never handle. Here is more information about Klipper and it's parters Fluidd and Moonraker.
