He is widely regarded, alongside Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev, as one of the most incredible ballet dancers of the 20th century. After a promising start in the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, he defected to the West in 1974 while on tour in Canada. He eventually settled in the United States for more opportunities and became a principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre. He later joined the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer. He collaborated with choreographers such as Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Twyla Tharp, and his repertoire includes both classical and contemporary works. In addition, his success as a dramatic actor on stage, cinema, and television has helped him become probably the most widely recognized contemporary ballet dancer.
