In 1926, the US adopted an improved M1911, designated the M1911A1. Still chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge and functionally the same, many of the changes were made to fit shooters hands better. Changes included a shorter trigger, cutouts in the frame behind the trigger, an arched mainspring housing, a longer grip safety spur, a wider front sight, and a shortened hammer spur. The M1911 and M1911A1 saw service until being replaced with the Barretta M9 in the mid 1980’s For more information historical firearms, head on over to If you like the History In Firearms content, please consider supporting us on Patreon, Playeur (Utreon), or with a Youtube Membership.
