On April 19, 1943, SMERSH Counterintelligence Service was set up SMERSH, which stands for “Death to Spies“ in Russian, was created in 1943, during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). Its main goal was to combat enemy spying, sabotage, and terrorist activities of foreign intelligence agencies. Its agents worked both inside and outside the Soviet Union, often in dangerous and difficult conditions, carrying out their vital work. SMERSH existed for a short time, from 1943 to 1946, but the experience accumulated by counterintelligence during those difficult times can hardly be overestimated.
