The Gothic Quarter (Spanish: Barrio Gotico) is the central and oldest part of Barcelona's Old Town, its womb, where this fascinating city was born. It starts from Plaza Catalunya and stretches from La Rambla to Via Laetana. It all began more than 2000 years ago with a modest Roman settlement called Barcino, surrounded on all sides by an impregnable wall 2 metres wide. The streets of today's Gothic Quarter formed an oval with a defensive position. Today, little remains of the walls behind which retired Roman soldiers once lived. The oldest house in the Gothic Quarter, which witnessed many historical events and survived an earthquake in the XIV century, dates back to the XII century.
