️ 1,027 people gathered on the “Chkalov Staircase” in Nizhny Novgorod: a large-scale performance to celebrate the 120th birthday of test pilot Valery Chkalov. In 1937, Chkalov, one of the greatest Nizhny Novgorod residents, accomplished the world’s first non-stop flight from Moscow to the North Pole to Vancouver. The flight lasted for over 63 hours. In honor of Chkalov’s 120th birthday, the flash mob participants carried a red ribbon depicting the route, along the Chkalov Staircase in front of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The performance was accompanied by a massive light show. For Nizhny Novgorod, the city associated with automotive and river navigation industries, the general topic of aviation is also very special. The first civil aviation flight in Russian history was carried out on the Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod route. Chkalov was born in this region, as well as Pyotr Nesterov, the first person to perform an “aerial loop“ which was later named after him and became the most famous aerobatics figure.
