On this edition of Conversations with Politics, I welcomed Vijay Prashad, author, journalist, and director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, to discuss two recent important political developments - one in Brazil and the other one in Israel. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who became Brazil's first left-wing president in 2002 returns to the country’s top job after competing in one of the most divisive elections in years. Vijay Prashad relived his memories following Lula's extraordinary trajectory in Brazilian politics. Meanwhile, in Israel Netanyahu won another shot at leading Israelis but this time his new government will be the most right-wing government ever. Vijay Prashad discusses what this means for the Liberal Israelis and for the Palestinians. Also, as the FBI opens an investigation into the killing of the respected Palestinian American Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, Vijay Prashad offers a number of overarching observations about the prospects of justice for Shireen Abu Akleh. Vijay Prashad is an Indian historian and journalist. He is the Director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Chief Correspondent for Globetrotter, and Chief Editor of LeftWord Books. He has published thirty books, including most recently: “The Withdrawal: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and the Fragility of US Power“ with Noam Chomsky with a foreword by Angela Davis (The New Press); “Washington Bullets“, with a preface by Evo Morales Ayma, and previously the two-volume history of the modern world, “The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World“ and “The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South“. #Brazil #Israel #VijayPrashad
