For a playlist of the entire History of California series: After Alta California had been peacefully conquered in 1769, franciscan missionaries came to convert the indigenous population. They set up mission buildings all along the California foot path that came to be known as El Camino Real, or the king’s road. The first ones were in San Diego and Monterey, and they kept adding new ones year after year, eventually creating 21 with the last one finished 1823. ------------------------------------------------------------ references: Bancroft, Hubert Howe.
