It seems Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken criticism of his migrant policy to heart. After Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson complained that Texas was busing migrants to his sanctuary city, Abbot decided to start flying them there instead. Abbott’s office announced on Wednesday that the first flight had departed from El Paso, with over 120 passengers on board. Most remained in the airport terminal on arrival in Chicago, while previous arrivals are sleeping in police stations and city shelters. The move follows Johnson’s rant at Abbott over migrants, where he accused the Texas governor of ‘attacking our country’ by sending migrants on buses to his sanctuary city. ‘Because Mayor Johnson is failing to live up to his city’s ‘Welcoming City’ ordinance by targeting migrant buses from Texas, we are expanding our operation to include flights to Chicago,’ said Abbott’s office in response. ‘Until President Biden steps up and does his job to secure the border, Texas will continue taking historic action to help our local partners respond to this Biden-made crisis.’
