RSO stands for Raupenschlepper Ost, which means Caterpillar East. As the name suggest, the RSO was developed by Steyr as a cheap all-round vehicle that could coupe with the infamous road conditions on the Eastern front. The vehicle was light with wide tracks and a simple suspension. The rounded, almost friendly looking cab came from a Steyr truck, but was shortened, hence getting the characteristic look. Although having excellent off road capabilities, it was slow and noisy, powered by an air cooled 3.5 liter V8. The RSO saw extensive use as a work horse on all fronts during the second world war. It served as a prime mover and personal carrier and some even got an anti air-gun or a PAK40 mounted on its flatbed. About the model: After making the AMX-13, I wanted to try a 1/6 scale vehicle, without any turrets, guns or other moving parts. A pure driving-vehicle.
