Band : ASPECTEE Album : “Jour Cinq“ (2011) The very mention of the word ‘melody’ will make the average dark ambient fanatic shrink away in disgust, but bear in mind that everything on this release has been done true to the ethos and respect of the genre. This is not a work which is created to necessarily uplift the listener: its purpose is to create a subtle heavy atmosphere, but one which is pulled a single rung from the bedrock of stock dark ambient by the melodic cadences which wash around the album walls. It’s for this reason that Jour Cinq is a successful and highly effective album – one which is able to retain our attention during multiple playthroughs in spite of the fact that there’s not a massive amount of change on offer. Rather than wanting to affront us, this is dark ambient which communicates. Jour Cinq exists very much as a companion, not an aggressor.
