Preparing for a shoji panels project, where I will need consistent chamfers on long pieces of wood, I made this plane inspired from the traditional japanese chamfer planes, mentori-kanna. The plane is made from a 42 mm block plane I had in the shop, cut it shorter and skewed, then inserted into a wooden guide body with 45 degrees bevels. A small brass plate was added on the sole to prevent damaging the mouth since will deal with sharp edges when chamfering the wood. The 45 degree body is made from two parts, the bevel done on a miter shooting board (probably this was the most critical job) and the second part, the rebates, that holds the little plane to slide in. The body can be done also in a single part, but I wanted more freedom to control the fine tuning of the angles and sizes that was the reason I took this approach.
