On September 7, 2011, the Yaroslavl hockey club Lokomotiv died in a plane crash. The Yak-42 plane was carrying the entire main team and coaching staff of the Lokomotiv hockey club. Of the 45 people on board, with the exception of hockey player Alexander Galimov and flight engineer, radio-electronic equipment specialist Alexander Sizov, all died on the spot. Hockey player Alexander Galimov was conscious when the ambulance took him away, but he suffered burns to 80% of his body and died in hospital on the fifth day. Alexander Sizov underwent a complex operation, spent several days in intensive care and survived. The farewell ceremony for the victims took place at Lokomotiv's home stadium, Arena 2000 in Yaroslavl. More than 100,000 people attended it (with a population of 600,000). Not a single ticket was returned for the match, which was to be held in Minsk. National sports federations of dozens of countries expressed their condolences to the relatives.
