Cue from the score of an aborted independent Colombian film. Composed, arranged, performed, mixed and mastered by Scott Sadowsky. This scene is a flashback to the protagonist’s childhood, where she’s looking up at her mother, who insists with a smile that the bad things that happened were just a dream. In order to communicate musically the sheer evil of the protagonist’s mother in just 13 seconds, I started with a slow but insistent timpani that plays minor 3rds plus a few transition notes. This is mostly doubled by a very underrated instrument - the bass trombone, which, in its lower range, sounds wonderfully ominous and foreboding! In the left channel, a section of low strings and horns plays similar notes, but long and drawn out, until the end where they hit that most cacophonous of intervals, the dimished 5th. In the meantime, the right channel hosts long and disquieting orchestral chord swells that evoke the evil that we suspect lurks nearby, but which we can’t see... yet. At the top end are a harp and celeste combo, two typically peaceful and calming instruments which play chords here that are anything but that. And finishing off the top end is a section of violins and violas that plays a strident arpegio. _____ Tema del score musical de una película independiente colombiana que no prosperó. Mira hacia arriba a su madre, quien insiste con una sonrisa que las cosas malas que le sucedieron fueron solo un sueño. Para comunicar musicalmente la maldad de la madre de la protagonista en solo 13 segundos, comencé con un tímpano lento pero insistente que toca terceras menores, además de algunas notas de transición. Casi las mismas notas las toca un instrumento muy subestimado: el trombón bajo, que, en su registro más grave, suena maravillosamente ominoso y amenazante. En el canal izquierdo, una sección de cuerdas graves y metales toca notas similares, pero largas y sostenidas, hasta que al final llegan al intervalo más estridente de todos, la quinta disminuida. Mientras tanto, el canal derecho alberga crecientes y disonantes acordes orquestales que evocan el mal que sospechamos acecha cerca, pero que aún no podemos ver… por ahora. En el rango más agudo, una combinación de arpa y celesta, dos instrumentos típicamente pacíficos y calmantes, tocan acordes que son todo lo contrario.
