Volkswagen's team of two T3 Syncro 4WD's (the only 2 RHD 16“ models ever produced) competed in the 1990 Australian Safari to prove that standard vehicles could successfully compete against the highly modified prototype vehicles. That a private entrant still had that chance of winning against the professional rally drivers is amazing, and indeed win they did in their class - under 2.5 litres.
