Divorce - Lord | Vevo DSCVR For a band named after the dissolution of marriage, Divorce has some ironically good chemistry. Its members - Felix Mackenzie-Barrow, Tiger Cohen-Towell, Adam Smith & Kasper Sandstrøm - hail from Nottingham’s “close knit” music scene. As a result, the quartet have known and admired one another since their teenage days; High school relationships tend to end in break-ups, but this four’s creative bonds only strengthened over time. Having officially formed around 2021, Divorce deployed two EPs in back to back years: ‘Get Mean’ (2022) and ‘Heady Metal’ (2023). In hindsight, the first EP felt like a trust-building exercise, whereas the second pushed the emotional envelope a bit further. “Before, I felt like we were very much writing for Divorce, and trying to figure out what we wanted to say as a band,” said Tiger around the time of the release of ‘Heady Metal.’ If those first two projects were about finding and staking out intrapersonal balance, then the band’s debut album, ‘Drive To Goldenhammer,’ is a totem of collective transcendence, like slipping a forever ring on a soulmate’s finger. Tiger and Felix’s voices intertwine throughout, and one can hear the Queen influence come through on tracks such as “Lord” and “Hangman.” Like all relationships there’s moments of blissful, loving clarity - best exemplified on the astoundingly beautiful album opener “Antarctica” - followed by teetering collapses into distortion (“Karen” and “Jet Show”).
