Megan Moroney - Sad Songs For Sad People (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. A check-in on what’s happenin’ down in Nashville has been long overdue for our DSCVR program. So we tapped in with a name that’s been on a lot of lips in Music City this year: Megan Moroney. The rising singer-songwriter’s breakout track “Tennessee Orange” employs one of country music’s best tropes: using a regional phenomenon (pickup trucks, cowboy boots, etc.) as a metaphor for something deeper. In this case, the South’s hot-blooded college rivalries threaten to throw a wrench in an equally steamy young romance. It’s the SEC version of ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ trading the Montagues and Capulets for Tennessee Volunteers and Georgia Bulldogs. Meg plays a convincing Juliet, innocently beseeching momma “don’t tell daddy/he’ll blow a fuse.” Moroney actually attended the University of Georgia, where she planned to study accounting before capitalizing on a chance to open a show for Chase Rice her freshman year. That’s the kind of authenticity that her 1 million followers have come to expect. Major outlets are all in, too. Rolling Stone called her debut album ‘Lucky’ one of the best albums of 2023 so far; American Songwriter praised its mix of relatable somber songs and mood boosting anthems. “I’m Not Pretty” falls in the latter category. Its sly wordplay, smooth arrangements, and conviction will remind listeners of early Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift, two of Meg’s idols. Conversely, “Sad Songs For Sad People” contains the confession “I want every word to hurt/like blue eyes cryin' in the rain.” Gotta love the slick Willie reference, too. Can’t wait to see her tread her own country road.
