The reason behind this was to establish the Ruble as a Major Currency to rival the US Dollar. However over the past 2 years that has not happened and Russia is now dealing in the Yuan for the majority of its trade, not just with China but also many other countries. As a result Russia is now dependent upon the Yuan and the Ruble is becoming a Dead Currency.
