Izamal (The City of Izamna) ° N, ° W Izamal is one of of the oldest and most interesting ancient cities in Yucatán. Although it was first settled in the pre-classic period, its largest structures were built in the 4th to 6th centuries during the classic period. It was still inhabited continuously throughout the postclassic period, and remained an important religious center until the time of the Spanish Conquest. The Spanish also made it into a very important site, and it features both ancient and colonial buildings of great importance.
