In 2001, BMW introduced the iDrive system which purged the cockpit of the growing number of buttons and controls. After that, in 2004 BMW became the first carmaker to present a Head-Up Display, which projected relevant driving information onto the windscreen in the driver’s direct line of sight. BMW became the first vehicle manufacturer worldwide to unlock unlimited in-car internet access in 2007. In response to the boom in smartphones – and the digital applications developed specially for them – apps from third parties could also be integrated into the BMW iDrive operating system from 2012. There are 14 million BMW cars on the road which provide data for creating new exciting and useful services. Services like we definitely couldn’t imagine in 2001.
