In the vicinity of Kiev, near the village of Markhalivka, a national military memorial cemetery has been established. The site recently held its first burials for five unnamed soldiers. The opening ceremony, however, was met with local protests. Demonstrators held signs expressing concerns such as, “Don’t bury heroes in the swamp,“ “The court ordered the memorial cemetery removed from the Markhalivka forest,“ “The government is lying,“ and “Don’t allow a Markhalivka Chernobyl.“ This development comes despite a previous court ruling that prohibited the cemetery’s construction in this protected natural area—a decision that appears to have been overlooked by authorities.
